Build an emergency-alert plan with more than one channel
Combine Wireless Emergency Alerts, local opt-in systems, NOAA Weather Radio, and a family communication plan.
Use multiple official channels
Keep Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled on compatible phones. Find your local government’s opt-in text or email system; enrollment is often required. Add NOAA Weather Radio or a battery radio where severe weather and outages are realistic risks.

Make every warning actionable
For the hazards common to your area, identify the safest shelter location, evacuation routes, transportation backup, and the person responsible for children, pets, medicine, and accessibility equipment.
Do not wait for an app to interpret an urgent official instruction. Follow the issuing authority, then use your plan to coordinate.

Review twice a year
Phone numbers, schools, workplaces, medications, and local systems change. Test the plan, update printed copies, replace batteries, and confirm that everyone recognizes the warning channels.
