Prepare for a power outage without creating new hazards

Plan essential loads, safe backup power, communication, food, medicine, and temperature before an outage.

This guide is general educational information, not individualized emergency, medical, or engineering advice. Follow current instructions from local authorities and qualified professionals.

Identify essential loads

Write down what truly needs power: medical equipment, refrigeration for medicine, phones, lights, temperature control, and communication. Record watts and expected hours instead of shopping from a generic “generator size.”

Ask the utility and equipment provider how to handle powered medical devices and refrigerated medicine. A battery bank, vehicle charger, or temporary relocation may be safer than improvised fuel equipment.

Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning

Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other fuel-burning device inside a home, basement, garage, tent, or camper. CDC says portable generators should operate outdoors more than 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents.

Use battery-powered or battery-backup carbon-monoxide detectors near sleeping areas. Never use a gas range or oven to heat a home. If dangerous heat or cold cannot be managed safely, move to an appropriate shelter.

  • Generator location more than 20 feet from openings
  • Working CO detectors with battery backup
  • Outdoor-rated cords and dry operation
  • No backfeeding into home wiring without approved professional equipment

Practice the low-power version of your day

Test flashlights, radios, chargers, and the printed plan. Know how long backup batteries last under the actual load.

Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed during an outage and follow current food-safety guidance from local officials and CDC. Do not rely on smell or appearance alone to judge unsafe food.
